There is increasing international pressure on export markets for information on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity for products throughout their life-cycle.
The GHG Footprinting programme is funded by MAF and involves the land-based primary sectors. Scion has been funded to develop the programme for the forestry and wood processing industries. Scion’s aim for the programme is to measure, manage and mitigate emissions and sequestration of GHG within these sectors.
The GHG Footprinting programme will:
- closely involve industry (forestry and wood processing)
- provide sound data on GHG emissions related to the entire supply chain (forestry, transport of logs and wood products)
- apply and test methodologies on a range of case studies
The case studies will provide detailed carbon footprints for a number of specific wood products (e.g., particleboard, timber weatherboard, rough-sawn timber) and will identify potential reductions in GHG emissions.
GHG footprinting will allow industry to communicate carbon footprints to their customers in an accurate and consistent way.
