The Bioenergy Knowledge Centre

This website is part of the Bioenergy Knowledge Centre (BKC), an initiative funded by the Forest Industries Development Agenda (FIDA) Bioenergy Programme. The purpose of the BKC is to help develop a bigger market for wood waste in New Zealand.

To help facilitate market development, EECA, who administers the FIDA Bioenergy programme, has engaged with Scion, the Sysdoc group and the Energy Library to form the BKC.

The BKC will perform the following functions:

  • Build the overall profile of bioenergy.
  • Increase knowledge of technologies both in New Zealand and internationally.
  • Ensure a broad range of information is available to potential users.
  • Build a community of like-minded companies where practical experience in implementing bioenergy alternatives can be shared.

The BKC will consist of four major components:

1. A web-based portal that provides self-directed learning and analysis of bioenergy opportunities.

2. The proactive dissemination of information to a broad range of stakeholders.

3. A pool of experts accessible via a “call centre” to assist evaluation and analysis of bioenergy opportunities for New Zealand-based projects (0800 BIOENERGY).

4. Provide tools and processes to improve the overall energy efficiency of the wood processing sector and to optimise energy use.

Web-based portal

The web-based portal will consist of a diverse compilation of information on bioenergy, a range of analysis tools to support decision-making processes for bioenergy projects, mechanisms to record relevant information related to FIDA funded feasibility and demonstration projects, linkages to other energy management and energy efficiency tools which will support the uptake of bioenergy, and links to case studies.

Proactive dissemination of information

To complement the accessibility and usability of information, the BKC will also proactively disseminate information to ensure greater awareness of bioenergy issues, build the overall profile of bioenergy, significantly increase knowledge of bioenergy and to ensure a higher quality of information is available to potential users.

Pool of experts

The call centre will provide access to experts to assist clients obtain information they require on bioenergy, for a specific project they may be working on or to work iteratively with an expert on establishing a new project opportunity. Experts will be sourced from the Bioenergy Association of NZ (BANZ), research organisations and experienced industry personnel. The experts will address general enquiries; assist clients to effectively utilise the decision support tools and provide in depth information on bioenergy technologies and options.
