Benefits of bioenergy
As concerns grow over both climate change and the reserves of fossil fuels, bioenergy has a prominent role to play in the provision of clean burning fuels. An added advantage of bioenergy is that it also encourages the planting of forests as carbon sinks.
New Zealand is in a good position to utilise its biomass resources for bioenergy production. The benefits are both economic and environmental.
The Bioenergy Association of New Zealand (BANZ) website is a good source of information about bioenergy, and New Zealand's potential in this area.
Cost competitive fuels - Woody biomass offers a cost-effective alternative to burning fossil fuels for some users. In sawmilling, for examples, the users can burn the wood waste produced on site. For those who need to buy fuel these advantages decrease, but the balance could shift significantly as the costs of fossil fuel rise. More...[PDF 268kb]
Waste minimisation – Using waste wood as fuel diverts waste from over-full landfills. The New Zealand Government has formulatied a strategy for reducing waste that will impact many growers and manufacturers. More...
Energy self-sufficiency – Biomass is a local resource, it is produced, processed and consumed in New Zealand. It therefore contributes to the energy self-sufficiency of New Zealand and the associated economic benefits.
Energy storage – Unlike wind, wave and solar, biomass is a storable form of renewable energy. It is capable of being transported and utilised at any time. In this way, it can be used as an energy buffer for other, more variable, renewable resources.
Carbon neutral - As a renewable energy source that can be grown and used sustainably, burning biomass has zero net greenhouse effect as the carbon dioxide given off during combustion is absorbed by the growth of the next crop of biomass, this form of renewable energy is referred to as carbon neutral. Read more about New Zealand's climate change policy.
Renewable energy source – Unlike fossil fuels, biomass fuels are renewable and therefore contribute to a more sustainable future for humanity. The New Zealand Energy Strategy proposes that as much new electricity generation as possible should be renewable.
